De Lesseps' Folly: First try, no luck
Panama picture - In 1878, Ferdinand de Lesseps, the French Engineer who built the Suez Canal, began the task of digging a canal across the Isthmus of Panama, then part of Columbia. Disease and engineering problems stopped him, and others picked up the shovels. Yet the start of his old first canal can still be seen -- that's it, just beyond that tug churning past us in the main channel.
