Khao Phansa (Thai Buddhist Lent) Thailand picture - At the begining of Thai Buddhist (Khao Phansa) some Thai NorthEastern towns (here Ubon Ratchithani) celebrate with a CANDLE FESTIVAL. The Thai people traditionally give offerings to the Monks at the beging of Buddhist Lent as the Monks will be staying at their Temples (Wats) for the duration of Lent. The offerings have traditionally been items such as candles and other necessities. In the past most Temples did not have electricitiy (some still do not). This Festival has grown out of this tradition and has become a contest of beauty and pride. The candles are very large and are HAND MADE with virtually 100% beeswax. The winning Candle (usually built as a large float) is then donated to the sponsoring Temple.
