Apparently, there are crypts beneath the main altar of the church which contain the remains of former bishops of the church and many dignitaries who once lived in San Miguel, including a former President of the Republic of Mexico. The crypts are open to the public only one day a year, on November 2nd, El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). We were there, missed that ;o(
