On one side of the "Jardín" (main square) in the heart of San Miguel, stands the neo-Gothic Parroquia with its fantastic fluted spires and turrets. Although 'parroquia' means 'parish church', locals call this the 'cathedral' and all important events take place here. Construction of the Parroquia (de San Miguel Arcangel) began in 1689, and continued until 1730 when the baroque-style towers were completed. In 1880, the neo-gothic tower was added giving the parish church its distinctive appearance and has made it an internationally recognized landmark. The monument in front features Fray Juan de San Miguel, the Franciscan monk who founded SMA in 1542.
