Bastogne is a charming little town in the hills of the Ardennes in the province of Luxemburg in the south of Belgium. The name 'Bastogne' will forever be associated with the Battle of the Bulge which took place in the last days of 1944. On December 16th 1944 the German army tried to take with a destructive power the American positions in the Belgian Ardennes in an attempt to push through to the north of Belgium to take the strategic important port of Antwerp. I am from Belgium, and was borne right after the war. My father was in the Genie, in Germany, during the 1940-45 war. I visited The Mardasson in 2002, with my daughter Amani (she was 14 then), borne in Berkeley, U.S.A. I wanted to show her where so many (too many) Americans had died for our freedem. It was a wonderful experience/trip, and we took photos for memories. I want to thank you all Americans who have given their lives for us. God bless you all.

I visited Bastogne early 70's when I was stationed in Germany with US Army. I was impressed with Mardasson Monument which also had coin machine on top of the Monument. At the time it cost about 1DM to play a recorded message in several languages. The recording gave a brief narrration about the Battle of the Bulge and Bastogne,after the narration it played TAPS. It brought tears to my eyes hearing Taps played while I looked out across the countryside trying to invision what all happened here so many years ago. PS...the photo of Eisenhouwer and Mc Auliffe I believe is actually a photo of Gen.Bradley,Eisenhouwer and Patton...not Mc Auiffe.

Thanks for the memory!
I have a photo of that Sherman tank that I took in the winter of 1953. I was in uniform then (USAF) and a group of townsmen saw me and immediately dragged me off to a local bar and bought me drinks. It's a wonderful memory that I'll cherish...when being an American was a signature of pride!
