"Burn" is Scottish for a small stream. So the "Routeburn" is the route of the burn. Our Scottish companion advised that the stream here is far too wide to be a burn. A burn would be no more than 4-6 feet wide. I'll take his word for it.
The Routeburn is a 3-day, 46 kms hike, if you do all the "optionals". We shaved 10kms off because of avalanche dangers along the Hollyford face, near Harris Saddle. We got a helicopter ride instead. What a bargain!
