Paoay Church
Sightseeing in Philippines picture - Was constructed by Augustinians in 1704. The famous fortresslike church is noted for its variety of architectural styles. The massive buttressess, exterior staircases, and facade are "earthquake naroque". Chinese elements are seen in the gable, while the crenellations and niches topping the walls suggest Javanese influence. The thck walls are of coral rubble faced with brick and sealed with particularly hard lime mortar made by mixing with sugarcane juice instead of water. The separate three-storey Bell tower, dating from 1793 was used by local guerillas in World war II and as a lookout by the Katipuneros during the revolution. The convento is across the street from the church. Paoay is noted for weaving.
