For days I traveled through a stultifying sameness of flat scrublands, seemingly endless kilometers of weirdly shaped termite mounds and oddly shaped trees..the land seemed nine-tenths sky - a hot brazen sky that seemed not to vault overhead but to press down like a heavy hand, suffocating everything beneath. The land in places has been almost entirely depopulated. Along many Outback tracks one can drive 100s of kilometers with out seeing a single habitation, a single human being.
