The park lies in the Sibenik and Knin municipality and covers two-thirds of the river's flow. Krka was proclaimed a national park on 24th January 1985, although the region has been under state protection since 1948. The Krka National Park covers an area of 14,200 hectares, of which 2,600 hectares are water.
