Isle Royale National Park is located in Lake Superior, closer to Canada than the U.S. The largest island, in the largest freshwater lake in the world, is hard to get to but well worth the effort. I spent three days backpacking in the park, May 25 thru May 28, 2002, and found the isolation of the island has many benefits. The sunsets, solitude, and moose are what I will most remember about this trip, as well as the interesting people I met during this adventure. The route undertaken is popularly known as the Feldtmann Loop, thirty miles with nights at Feldtmann Lake, Siskiwit Bay, and Washington Creek campgrounds. Along the way I encountered no less than twenty moose and saw a beautiful sunset at the end of each day. The following is a brief photo trip report of what turned out to be a great backpack experince.
