Smyrna! What history! Even to this day, you are the most sung-about city in the Greek World! From your wonderful cuisine to some of the most beautiful Greek women.......and we must not forget that you are the birthplace of the bouzooki and Rebetika Music! I have visited you many times and I love you! I had family in both Constantinople and Smyrna. Smyrna........a wonderful city!

Thanks so much for your good photos of Izmir! I once spent a week or two there with my Mom. This was about 1976. At the hotel, I notice the mattresses were stuffed with straw, (first class hotel!) so went to the front desk. "Can we have some mattresses that are not stuffed with straw?" Ans: "Madam, all our mattresses are stuffed with straw!" So, we got used to them! Turks are very nice and gracious people, so are the Greeks! Wish they would all "learn to love each other"! Rumlar sehrin ucte birini anca yokettiler. Karsiyaka hic yanmadi. Guzelyali, Mithatpasa, Konak Meydani, Sarikisla hep yerli yerinde duruyodu Turk askeri Izmir'i teslim aldigi zaman. 1950, 1960 ve 1970'lerin ac gozlu politikacilari, mesela rahmetsiz Adnan Menderes ve Celal Bayar, rant ugruna butun Kordon Evler'inin yikilmasina goz yumdu, 1827'den kalma Sarikisla'nin uzerinde cift serit yol gecirdi, Konak Meydani'na devasa hacimdeki zevksizlik simgesi belediye binasini yaptirdi. Gercek Izmir'den geriye kalan yerler, benim fotograflarimdakilerdir. Beni dinleyecek Baskan olsa, Sarikisla'yi bi daha yaptirir -ayni Berlin'in savas sonrasi yaptigi gibi-, Meydan'daki iki katli binalara zorunlu Ege mimarisi dis cephe uygulamasi getirirdim ki Izmir ozune donebilsin.

Architectural Historian & Librarian
It is truly a beautiful city with wonderful architecture. I'm an American of Greek descent. My great aunt and her family once lived in Smyrna and owned a textile factory. I do not have the heart to visit Izmir and probably will never get there, so I really enjoyed these wonderful photos. Thank you for enriching my imagination.

Easy to explain
The foundations were laid by the great Alex. After an earthquake they toppled, and they lay leveled until -I think- Marcus had a new set of columns built. Didn't think of that? If you are aware, the columns, are not marble but concrete - a building material invented during Augustus reign. Either way, the columns are Roman, not Hellenistic. No one is trying to change history my paranoid friend. Do not call anyone a lier if you are inconsistent about historical facts.

How can those columns be Roman if they date back to Alexander!? The Romans hadn't even begun their campaign when Alexander lived so with other words you either lie or is incompitent. Either way those ancient columns were biult by Greeks. Do not try to change the history!
