Kenya was the first to understand the value of tourism in Africa, and to appreciate the fact that the country's animals are more valuable alive. Those incredible animals mean increased tourism, and tourism brings many visitors to Kenyans so desperately in need of dollars.
The capital city of Nairobi is fairly accessible : ten hours to London from Los Angeles, and another ten to Nairobi. And the city serves as a central point of departure to the Masai Mara National Game Reserve and other areas teeming with wildlife.
First and foremost, it is that wildlife that attracts the visitor. And Kenya boasts of more species of wildlife than any other country in Africa.
In 1993 we joined more than 130 other photographers, both amateur and professional, to become part of a project called Focus on Africa. Our immediate aim was to get some of our photos included in a coffee table book dedicated to the African safari, also called Focus on Africa. The long-range goal was somewhat loftier, to make the reader aware of the tremendous resource African wildlife is to the world, and to point up the need for preserving that wildlife, not only for ourselves but for future generations.
