I visited Edinburgh in June 2002 amidst both the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations and the beginning of the World Cup. The weather was surprisingly sunny and pleasant. Unfortunately we were too early for the Edinburgh Festival sporting opera, theater, and dance.
Edinburgh is an old, picturesque city. It used to be known as 'Auld Reekie' though I have heard a variety of reasons for the old nickname. Some say Edinburgh was once an industrial city and a thick layer of smoke would hover about the city. I have also heard that the name was earned due to the city's poor sewer system. But to my eyes and nose Edinburgh was clean and inviting, and 'Auld Reekie' is now used in connection with the gimmicky tours of 'haunted Edinburgh'.
