Note the George Cross at the left side. This exceptional award for bravery was given to the entire nation by King George VI as a tribute to their refusal to surrender during the horrendous bombing of 1942. That successful defence allowed Malta to become the springboard and operations centre for the Allied invasion of Sicily.
