Airplane Rock
From the descriptions you gave of your hike I can tell you that you were no where near Airplane Rock. Airplane Rock is in the next hollow to the ENE. You were actually in Conkle's Hollow State Nature Preserve. It involves NO private property issues. In fact it can be reached using part of the Buckeye Trail.Try it again. It's worth the effort.

get to airplane rock from parking area
we were just there, i saw no "no trespassing" signs. there is a gate that says "service vehicles only". go through that, when you reach the place that the trail splits into three trails go to the left. if you go right it will take you to "box canyon". if you go straight you will end up in the middle of nowhere (we mistakenly went that way first, big mistake). its a real long hike to airplane rock (i've been told up to 6 miles round trip) but its worth it. remember go to the left. the trail is wide and well kept, if its not -you went the wrong way. think about getting a horse instead of hiking, take lots of water and lunch. don't leave any trash! remember, go left (the trail is marked with white spray paint on the trees) enjoy!

I recently went with a friend to find Airplane Rock. We found the parking, and started walking down a trail, but there was a gate there that said "Service Vehicles Only". Beyond the gate was a large pile of forest debris, so we turned back thinking that wasn't the correct path. We didn't find any other trails or any signs so we left.

Thats funny. I never knew that. We use to train our horses there for AERC events.
Airplane rock is beautiful. We have ridden all over that area unimpeded.

Directions
I recently went to hocking hills to try and find airplane rock. I found the parking for airplane rock, but was unable to locate the actual site. I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide some sort of directions at all so next time I head there, I could finally get to see it! Thank you!

Re: Primitive Camping
There is no camping around Airplane Rock. The Rock itself is on private property, but state forest land is immediatley adjacent. But you can't camp on state forest land either, unless it is a designated spot. Horse trails or an old gas service road are the only way to the area near Airplane Rock, where you'll find hitching posts and even a latrine. You can use your own judgement about going out onto the Rock.

Haven't been there in a few months so the no trespass signs must be new.

Airplane Rock
So we stayed at Glen Laurel (great place by the way) and attempted to find Airplane Rock. Found Airplane Rock Parking alright, but when we saw the NO TRESPASSING signs we too stopped. Wish someone would have told us to go on ahead.... looks neat in the pictures.

Private Property
That is the reason. Private property. I went there, and as we found the signs, we did not trespass. You never know what can happen...

Airplane Rock resides in Crane Hollow which is private property. However , the private citizen that owns it allows folks to explore as long as they don't destroy. She is 90 yrs. old and owns ~6,000 acres of the area, and has already "willed" it to the state when she dies.

Very nice pics Ron! I finnally got to airplane rock last year. It was well worth the hike. I wonder why airplane rock is not publishized as much or on the hocking hills websites as much as ash cave or other attractions?
