The ancient terracing at Montaillou<br> The Pyrenees picture - These terraces which already existed in the time in which the book is set, were used by the families in the village to grow the crops which sustained them. I find it incredible that families from here walked to modern day Lombardy in Italy during their lives. It was a tough enough existance without the inquisition!
