Thun Trail -- It's All Good
It's amazing what a difference a couple months can make. Back in the spring when I took a ride on the Thun Trail, I was disappointed to say the least. Not this time.

The Thun Trail actually looks like a trail now, not a thorofare that cuts through parts unknown. Whoever is responsible for that has been doing one heck of a job on it. ANYBODY with any kind of bike can now enjoy a quiet ride on the trail from Reading to Pottstown or vice versa. Charlie (below) hit the nail right on the head. Some of that work must have been done just after I used the trail the last time.

The trail between Pottstown and Reading has been greatly improved this spring. Miles of new cinder has been put down. The trail has been widened. New signage is going up. Near the Reading end solar lights have been installed. An occasional section has been paved. Someone is doing a really nice job. Its all wide enough for two bikes to pass anywhere now. The new cinders are soft in places as they are not packed down by usage yet. The section of trail that was on roads remains on roads.

Thun Trail, Good and Bad
Part of Berks County's Thun Trail is on-road, using back roads parallel to 724. No complaints there. In fact, an adandoned Exxon gas station adds charm to the ride. The trail section from the east end of Birdsboro to the Montgomery County line is good. It would be excellent if they could make it a little wider.

But the section running west from Gibraltar to Reading is a different story. If you look at the photo carefully you can see how rugged it is--too many stones. There are also isolated areas (not pictured here) where the trail narrows to a cow path. Unless you have a mountain bike or a hybrid with wide or deep-tread tires, I would not recommend using this section. Somebody needs to get out there and sweep up the gravel and put down more cinders on the western section.

Another SJ bike path
Found another bike path in S. Jersey that starts in Gibbsboro (near police station) & runs along United States Avenue to Berlin,NJ. Haven't tried it yet, but intend to.

Monroe Twp. Bike Path
I have discovered another bike path in SJ making use of an abandoned railroad line. It's called the Monroe Township Bike Path and it runs parallel and south of Rt 322 between fries Mill Road (Rt. 655) and Williamstown-Blue Bell Rd. (Rt. 633). I plan to check it out this weekend. If someone could figure out a way to connect these bike paths that run on abandoned RR we could have ourselves a South Jersey Bicycle Highway!

SJ Bike Trails
I have been on both the 5 block bike trail in Runnemede and that one leads to the 3 mile bike path in Blenheim, in between is a RR right of way that could be developed to connect the two. Does anyone know how to go about getting this done? Both trails are in direct alignment with the P.S.E.G high tension wires that run eastward.

2 small trails in SJ
There are 2 small bike trails in South Jersey and they both lie along the same abandoned rail line. One runs from Woodland Ave. in Blenheim,NJ and ends near Marshall Ave. in neighboring Blackwood. The other runs through Runnemede, NJ parallel to the Black Horse Pike along Bowers Avenue and the old railroad tracks. -John P.S. I checked out the beginning of the A.C. Bikeway (it's on new Atlantic County maps). It looks great .. and I can't wait. Got that from your website. thanks!!
