Walrus herd at Verkhuturora Island
Kamchatka picture - This is probably the closest I will ever be to a herd of walrus. Just finding them is difficult enough, but getting this close to them is another matter. We carefully approached them from behind for over an hour, keeping downwind, as quiet and as close to the ground as possible. Finally we lay flat in the grass at the back of their beach on Verkhuturora Island -- less than 100 yards away. Seabirds swirled around them as a few heads turned to look in our direction. This is my favorite picture of them.
