Graves in the fog: Bering Island
Kamchatka picture - In 1741, Vitus Bering, after being first to explore what is now the Bering Sea, was shipwrecked on the island now named in his memory. He, and some of his crew, died here of scurvy. Surviving members of his expedition buried their commander and shipmates on the island, then rebuilt their ship and returned to the mainland to tell their stories and open the Bering Sea to fur traders. We visited their graves in a heavy fog.
