Gull over Kamchatka
Kamchatka picture - I was photographing the warm afterglow of a Bering Sea sunset when a seagull suddenly appeared in my viewfinder. One of the problems with many digital cameras is that there is a slight delay between the moment you push the shutter button and the moment the picture is actually taken. If this gull had been flying faster, he would have been out of the picture by the time my camera got around to recording the image. But this gull was in a slow glide, slow enough to stay in my frame. I was delighted with the result -- the gull appears on the right side of the picture, just under the rows of golden clouds and just above the mountains. Exactly where I would have put the gull if I had planned it all myself.
