McCarthy LODGE
The McCarthy Lodge (not inn) is the name of the place. Terrific, really the most authentic Alaskan place we've seen. The town's folks are uniquely quirky, in a good way. You feel like you found a lost paradise.

Mary Alice -- I only spent a few hours in Talkeetna so I really can't tell you much about the whereabouts of that sign you mention -- it was on the edge of a large field used as parking lot for the big Moose Dropping festival that was going on the weekend we were there. I don't recall seeing that museum that used to be your school. Glad the pictures bring back memories for you, though. Mary Alice.

Glorious Photos.
Superb article Phil. The first things which struck me were the colours exploding on the screen. The first 3 photos have such a beautiful contrast in their colours. Alaska looks like a truly amazing place to visit (and live perhaps). I shall certainly visit it sometime. Thank you for your kind comments regarding our Afghanistan articles. retired Chrysler?
Actually, that looks a lot like a retired Checker, not a Chrysler. Checkers were made in Kalamazoo, Michigan and had Chevrolet drivetrains.

I greatly appreciate your kind comments on these photos. I often rely on either a Tiffen Megaplus .75x wideangle converter lens, or a Tiffen Megaplus 2x telephoto converter lens. Both of these converter lenses mount on my Canon G2 camera with a Tiffen adapter tube. They are relatively inexpensive -- together they cost less than $150, including the adapter -- yet they do not significantly distort or soften the image. I also carry a Canon 1.5x telephoto converter lens, that mounts with the help of a Canon adapter tube, but use it very rarely. During my recent travels in Alaska, Siberia, Africa, and South America, I most frequently used the .75x wideangle converter, which gives me the equivalent of a 26mm-76mm zoom lens. This focal length range allows me to move closer to my subjects in order to emphasize them, but still retain important context for meaning.

Uplifting! Your work is a gift to all who see it. I finally decided to buy a digital camera after borrowing my mother in-laws for a year:) not because I naively thought if I too got a G2 camera I could do it as well ...but because I realized what is possible if one applies themselves to their craft and art as you have. My wife and I enjoyed your visual and well narrated "gifts" you've shared here.

P.S. What extender and adaptor lenses did you use if any? Were they Canon or aftermarket i.e. Bower, Raynox etc.
