Coming from Firenze Certosa, the first monuments worthy of architectural interest that we meet are two ancient castles positioned on the ridge of the knolls/hills, as if they were guarding the entrance to the valleys: the Vicchiomaggio Castle and the small church of S. Maria on the bank to the right of the Greve stream,and the Verrazzano Castle on the left. VICCHIOMAGGIO Remembered in documents as Vico de Lambardi (857) as a testament to the native longobard settlements, it still retains a powerful 3rd century tower and traces of its ancient walls. In the 16th century, it would turn into a villa and, like other courtly residences, would be surrounded by a beautiful Italian-style garden.
