Today, this delicate balance needs particular attention. To best safeguard it, the municipalities that have administrative authority over the territory have joined forces, overcoming centuries of division and often parochial oppositions, in an effort to protect and enhance the value of the Chianti in a united way. From the Peace of Pontignano, so-called symbolically, eight municipalities have emerged. They retain their individual identities but they endeavour to cooperate in order to preserve common tradition, skills, expertise and values. An attempt at responding to the demands of efficiency of modern times, safeguarding the historical connotations of the territory and therefore its roots.
