It is firmly documented a valuable wine that, already at the end of the 14th century, brightened the meals of the rich mercantile florentines and being found between Florence and Siena, during a time of large cultural, artistic and economic growth of the two main cities of Tuscany, certainly favoured its development, not only as a commercial centre. In short, the almost regular presence in the rich country-houses of the élite, represented by the main florentine families, greatly helped to enrich the zone.
