I installed a small vacuum gauge from McMaster Carr in the ashtray. Since I stopped smoking at age six, I have no other use for it. The gauge allows for quick monitoring of engine load and when used with the LM-1 wideband AF meter, is a great tuning tool. On the road, I can select the proper gear for fuel economy by monitoring the point where the carb's power valve opens. On this carb that's at 9" or less of vacuum. NOTE: 5/10/08 - Driving in the 15" - 10" vacuum range for accelleration and cruise resulted in 20 mpg for combined city and backroad fuel economy. I have not run it on the hiway exclusively long enough to evelaluate that mpg. I expect 23 though... NOTE: On a 160 mile mostly hiway trip at 65 mph, I achieved 24.7 mpg. I mounted the gauge on a leather bezel inside the ashtray to match the dash. The ashtray's cover flips closed concealing the gauge and restoring the vintage look.
