On my excursion in July of 2002, the weather was simply gorgeous, with no wind, a sun lit sky and temperatures in the mid 20 degree range (75 F). The Boat, the Heritage Explorer, is a converted fishing vessel, which took me and my six companions on our four hour trip across the head of Trinity Bay and back to Dildo Island, site of Newfoundland's first fish hatchery and recently discovered site of Dorset Eskimo settlement.
Skipper, Gerald Smith, is the critical element in the trip. The former whaler-turned-naturalist is very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and the history and archaeological aspects of the island. Its easy to see why this knowledge plus his genuine warmth and character earned him the Ambassador of Newfoundland and Labrador Award in 1999.
The diversity of birds, including eagles, and often whales, the marvelous coastline, and the interpretation of early settlement are the components of the trip. The traditional boil up on Dildo Island is a wonderful ending.
A must for any visitor to our province.
