You can do this by bus but it's much better if you rent a car and just GOOOOO. We drove from Alesund to Hellesylt, using ferries when needed. From there to Geiranger, and we returned the opposite way. From Geiranger to Eidsdal, to Valldal to Stranda and back to Alesund. It's a whole day trip but well worth it.
