I went to Mongolia over Christmas 1996 basically because of a dare. My friend, who I went to China with in 1995, thought I would be afraid to go to China by myself. So I said "I'm going to Mongolia, too" It was a bit of a hassle getting a double-enty Chinese visa, but it was well worth it.
