"Don't go into Tokyo, go to Narita City instead". That's what the guide suggested when we would have to spend the night near the Narita Airport on our way home from Asia in 1995.

It was Sunday, and it would be a two hour train ride from the airport to the city. And very few Japanese would be in Tokyo itself. So we took his advice and took a bus to Narita City, about 20 minutes and 20 cents away.

We were very glad we did.

Narita City is less than 50 years old. Since it was developed in 1954 it has become an international tourist area with a number of scenic spots and places of historic interest.

The day was beautiful and many Japanese came out to Narita City in their Sunday best. Lots of their children were dressed in the traditional manner for photos, and we were quick to get into picture taking, as you'll see.

We also heard some authentic Japanese music, and saw an unusual temple ceremony where we watched dozens of women pass their purses up to the altar of the church to be blessed.

It was a joy for the two of us to spend Sunday afternoon in Narita City . I have a hunch that you'd love it, too.
