- Monterey Bay may be devoid of fishes but there's lots of starfishes here. *Almost a century ago, Monterey Bay was so heavily fished that the fishes here almost went extinct. Hence, fishing here was banned but it's taking awhile for them to make a comeback & so, you'll rarely see fishes here when diving except the small ones like the anchioves in groups.
