Something special!
Thanks, Frank, for your kind comments on my South African photographs. I found the South African game reserves to be very special places. For example, nowhere else on earth can you see as many White Rhinos in one place as in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. The massed elephants enjoying the water holes at Addo Elephant Park are breathtaking. And we did not even see Kruger -- which is supposed to be the greatest of your game parks! Your pride is justified -- your country's wildlife is accessible, plentiful, and well cared for.

I'm glad you enjoyed looking at my pictures. As for storage, I use a 256MB compact flash memory card. I generally fill it with 125 pictures, taken at high resolution and low compression, within three to four hours of shooting. I try to shoot each subject until I get it right. If the memory card gets full while I am still shooting, I erase the experimental shots, as needed, to make room on the card. When I get back to my hotel or my cabin on the ship, I download the contents of the card to my Mac iBook laptop computer, so I can begin shooting again with an empty card. In the evenings, I edit that day's photos, keeping only the best images. When I get a few hundred of them saved on my hard disc, I will burn them on to a CD. Hope this helps.

I love the Maasai beadwork shot (what contrasts!), Creatures of the forests, Nosy Kombo, dead ahead, Madagascar Craftsman, Madagascar Musician, Zulu portrait, DumaZulu for it's simplicity and candidness, Let the eclipse begin, Totality: corona glows in a morning sky (hand-held!? wow!), War memorial, Swakopmund, Nambia, Highland Landscape, St. Helena, Napoleon's garden, St. Helena.

Amazing!!!
Philip, I am totally blown over by your Africa photos. I can almost feel the air and smell the earth. All the photos are very interesting and beautifully composed with breath taking colours. It is really amazing how you can portray a macro shot of a snail as well as a vast landscape with such sensitivity. I especially like the war memorial photo. It is so poignantly composed with the dying soldier framed at the bottom of the picture. I also like the photo of the three children enjoying their polaroid shots...it is priceless. I also notice that you have cropped quite a few of your images, particularly that of the animals. This adds drama to the images.

I was inspired to buy a Canon G2 camera by you and I have not been disappointed. I share your philosophy of only enhancing the images and not altering them.

Thanks so much for leaving the nice comment on my African pictures. You understand what I am trying to accomplish with my photographs. I want them to tell a story, to interpret rather than just describe the subject. I also want my pictures to reflect my point of view on what I see.

I am flattered that you equate some of my work with National Geographic programming, or with works of art. That's a tall order for any photographer, but I do try to raise the standard for my work every time I go out. Whether I succeed or not, is up to viewers such as yourself.
