The primitive crest over the entrance gate to St. Helena's Castle bears the date "April, 1834". That date marked the collapse of the English East India Company, and St. Helena's take over by the English Crown. Without Napoleon or commerce, and with the opening of the Suez Canal, St. Helena became a place without a purpose and was virtually forgotten.
