Kananaskis Country or a.k.a. K-Country, located less than 100 kilometres west of Calgary is considered by the majority of Calgarians as "Calgary's Four Seasons Playground". This huge area is located on the east slopes of the Rockies, beside Banff National Park, and provides many with great outdoor adventures. Many fine cross country skiing trails, hiking trails and downhill skiing satisfies outdoor enthusiasts.

This large wilderness area of 5200 square kilometres is equivalent to slightly half the size of Qatar in the Persian Gulf.

Here are the pictures, taken last Sunday, January 12th, 2003 at Evan Thomas golf course beside Mount Kidd and Kananaskis River. You will notice the warm winter, the weather is influenced by the Chinook warm winds that have not left much snow on the ground.

The Chinook is a natural phenomenon and has nothing to do with global warming or any human activities. This a natural warm wind coming from the tropical part of Pacific Ocean, flowing above the Rockies in British Columbia where the moisture is left behind. The wind then drops on the east slopes and mostly on Calgary and the surrounding region as a dry and warm wind.

Here, on these pictures you can see the Chinook effect, which for some is a blessing for some disappointment and lack of snow.
