Aerial view of the Château de Vincennes
Sightseeing in Paris picture - A royal residence for six hundred years, the Château de Vincennes was built by the Capetian kings in the 12th century on the site of a former hunting lodge. The first manor house was constructed by Philippe-Auguste (1180-1223) and Saint-Louis (1226-1270), who stayed there often. A second residence was built during the reign of Charles V (1364-1380), and the castle was endowed with an imposing Donjon (medieval keep) and a vast surrounding wall. The Bois de Vincennes has been a hunting park since the 12th Century. In 1860, Napoleon III gave the Bois de Vincennes to Paris on the condition that the park would be public for the Paris population.
