Basilique du Sacré-Coeur
Sightseeing in Paris picture - On top of the hill above the city's Montmartre district, the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur has a panoramic view over most of Paris. Begun in 1875, completed in 1914, and consecrated in 1919 after the end of World War I, the structure is a mixture of Romanesque and Byzantine architecture. The basilica's construction was financed by every parish in France. The 275 foot center bell tower contains the "Savoyarde". Cast in Annecy in 1895, it is a bell weighing no less than 19 tons and thus one of the biggest in the world. The interior of the church contains one of the world's largest mosaics which depicts Christ with outstretched arms.
