Salvador da Bahia is the capital of Bahia state and is often abbreviated *Bahia* by Brazilians. The city was second, after Lisbon, in the Portuguese Empire. Many African slaves were brought to the city in the 15/th century and the city is also know as the *African soul of Brazil*.
