The drive from Phoenix to Roosevelt on Hwy 88 also known as Apache Trail is Arizona's famous two-lane road. It was built by Apache Native Americans to haul supplies from Phoenix to the construction site of the Roosevelt Dam. 44 miles long... I got through half of it in 4 hours of driving and hiking a bit before I had to return to Phoenix. Hwy 87 runs through some of the same country but turns further noth on to Payson and eventually the Mogollon Rim and central points. I took that the next day on my way to Sedona. These are some of the true Arizona desert highlights from both roads... some include my travel buddie on his first trip to the desert! I only had to pull one small cactus out of his paw and it didn't seem to phase him a bit! He's well at home on the hike!
