The Bears in Alaska September 2004 This trip took us from Manchester England to Anchorage Alaska via Atlanta. From Anchorage we took a local bus down to Homer [this is the end of the road south] From Homer we made a day trip by float plane [this took one+half hours] to the Katmai National Park. On arrival we went ashore by boat. The walk to the location was no more than 1/2 mile along the shore [surrounded by Bears] We spent 6 hr just being there and we enjoyed more than 20+ Bears just constantly catching the Salmon in the river. They quite often brought them up to just behind were we were sitting [as per the photos!!] They would devour their catch, have a little rest and then back to the river for more. At this time of the year [Sept] the Bears are Power Feeding to gain as much Fat as possible ready for the winter hibernation time [which there was only a few weeks away] We then took the Alaska Ferry from Homer and sailed down the Aleutian Chain to the end of the line Dutch Harbor. This took 5 days calling at various little Islands, stopping over from anywhere between a couple of hours to the whole day on Kodiak Island. The weather down was great until we arrived at Dutch Harbor and then we were delayed by 5 hours for our return flight to Anchorage [bad weather!!] After flying from Anchorage back to Atlanta Georgia we had a rental car and made our way to Florida for what we thought would be 10 days relaxing in the SUN!! After only 5 days we decided to leave Florida as Hurricane Ivan was going to come calling that week-end. We took ourselves back up to-wards Georgia and on to Chattanooga Tennessee. We decided to visit Point Park and Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga and then before we flew back to England we decided to spent a few days in Atlanta [nice change to have been in a city for a few days] Our experience of the Bears the Ferry and the stunning scenery has put Alaska back on our travel agenda for 2006!! Hope you enjoy the photos. Thank's Karin Wright.
