While exploring Canada's northwestern lands, I took a day trip out of Whitehorse to see Alaska's panhandle, the town of Skagway in particular. Although Skagway is an interesting town in a scenic location - and the drive to it is quite beautiful as well - the town is now frequently visited by Alaskan cruise ships. A few such ships were in town when I arrived - it's hard to appreciate the real character of a small town when tourists fill up just about every nook and cranny.
