Andrews was the son of Surgeon Captain OW Andrews CBE RN of St Briavel's Gloucestershire. He served on the Royal Oak in the Meditteranean (1932-34), served on the aircraft-carrier HMS Hermes in China, the destroyers Brilliant and Intrepid, before joining HMS Barham in 1940 shortly after his promotion to Lieutenant Commander. He features in the list of casualties as "missing presumed killed".
