The Salare de Uyuni is 26000 km squared, and 15m deep. Solid salt. After the rain, there's a thin layer of water over the salt, which gives perfect mirror images of the sky. Without water, there's still a mirage effect that creates reflections of distant mountains, making them apear as islands floating above the ground.
After the salt flats, the landscape is equally stunning. Filled with colourful mountains, red rock, and very little vegetation, it's some of the most magnificent scenery I've ever seen (and I've grown up in some pretty amazing mountains!). These pictures hardly show what it's like. This is definately on my list of recommended destinations.
