That's a former king of Poland standing above the square in Old Town, holding a cross in one hand and a sword in the other. This is the column of Sigismund III Vasa, the king who had moved the capital of Poland to Warsaw 400 years ago. This was the symbol of Warsaw, until World War II and the German invasion.
