German tank shells destroyed the column in 1944. The Nazis also set explosives in 100,000 bored holes and blew up the beloved Castle, in the background. But many Polish historians and architects risked death at the hands of the Germans by hiding hundreds of pieces of the castle's treasures, wall paintings, decorations, even doors and windows before the Castle was destroyed.
