Spectacular Views in Iceland picture - Pingvellir or the assembly plains is where the first norse settlers, who started coming here in 890 to avoid submitting to the tyranical king Harald Haarfager, set up their first parliament called "Alping" in 930. The great natural beauty of the lava formations make this one of the most beautiful sites in Iceland. In the foreground is Lögberg, where the old Alþing was held. The speaker stood there and recited the laws at the start of the Alþing. The gorge, Almannagjá, is the rift between the continental plates of Europe and America, on the right Europe, on the left America.
