On approach to Istanbul airport from the north on the morning of 21st April, my impressions are of a very large metropolis sprawling in every direction on both sides of the Bosphorus, with housing estates consisting only of apartment buildings of similar design and colour. Istanbul is the only city in the world straddling two continents - Europe on the western side, and Asia to the east.
