Nearby is the town of Vézelay, a living museum of French antiquity, that stands frozen in time. It was one of the great pilgrimage sites of the Christian world because it contains the tomb of St. Mary Magdalene, that "beloved and pardoned sinner," who is believed to have been Jesus' wife. The Third Crusade left from there in 1190.
