The glaciers are still almost 50 miles away, but back in 1794, when voyagers first passed this way, Glacier Bay didn't exist! Instead they found only a wide indentation in the shore, filled with a solid wall of ice. They named the area Icy Strait because there was so much ice that they could barely get their ship through it.
