Shortly after noon, smoke came out of the chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel. At first, it was hard to make out, but Vatican TV broadcast the image to the large outdoor monitors placed in St. Peters Square. The smoke swirled around a bit, darkened, then became definitely black. Everyone stood silent for several moments.
