The only way to tour into the bottom of Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-shay') is with Navajo guides. Serena and I took a group tour into the canyon with Thunderbird Tours, the only company that does group tours in their big 6WD vehicles. You can also go into the canyon with private guides with your own 4WD (if you dare). Otherwise, you can do the rim drives and hike down to see one of the ruins, White House ruins.
The Shake & Bake tour was fun. It was a bumpy ride, alright, but luckily it wasn't too hot while we were there. We saw lots of ruins, petroglyphs and pictographs and the beauty of the setting in the canyon. There are Navajo that still reside in the canyon, but only during the summer months when they can farm.
