The area that is now the city of Memphis Tennessee was once settled by the Chickasaw Indians. After passing through Spanish, French, and British hands, the region was finally ceded to the United States. The Americans built a town and named it after a city in Egypt, when it was thought the Mississippi River resembled the Nile.

Meaning 'place of good abode,' Memphis became the largest inland port and cotton market in the South.
